Hotel Indigo Grand Cayman is Farouki Farouki’s largest and most expansive hotel project to date. Our scope includes the interior design of the guest rooms, lobby pavilion, three-meal restaurant, rooftop bar, pool bar, grab-and-go, meeting rooms, ballroom, fitness center, retail shop, and pool deck finishes and furniture.
The interior design leans into Hotel Indigo’s notion of a “neighborhood story”, making sure that all of the design narratives stem from the history, land, and culture of Grand Cayman.
Early in the design process, we were inspired by a 1958 aerial photograph that shows that the site of the hotel was a lush mangrove forest. We developed a concept of the hotel as a handmade hideaway within a lush forest of tropical plants. The use of natural materials, artisan wooden millwork, and tropical colors results in a collection of interior spaces that blend with the environment. Woven elements within light fixtures and furniture speak to the local tradition of weaving silver thatch palm leaves. The design celebrates the island's early locals’ creative use of available resources and materials.
Driving around the island, we were excited to see playful patterns on vernacular architecture and fences. These patterns inspire the concept of a “modern illustrator” serving as a muse for the project. Simple and playful shapes and forms add a youthful, bold, and modern layer to the furniture, lighting, and art.
Lastly, we took inspiration from the geology of the island. Local Caymanite stone has a gorgeous blend of warm whites, rusty reds, oranges, and browns. These colors form the base color palette for the guest rooms. Also, the project's most prominent mural illustrates Grand Cayman's unique underwater topography and hints at why its waters are so beautiful.
