The Commons - Furniture Design

The building's design architect, Weiss/Manfredi, designed a beautiful building that is full of natural light and large open spaces with a grand scale. The challenge was to use the furniture design to bring the scale down to that of a single user and to add a complimentary layer of materials and color.

The students who use The Commons vary in group size, needs, and personality, so it was important to create a wide range of spaces and experiences. Intimate single-person areas are comfortable for introverts or students looking for a quiet place to study, whereas large group areas are great for extroverts looking to socialize or student groups who need to spread out.

A line of custom planter screens separate one of the dining rooms from a high traffic walkway.  The frame is made of powder coated steel.  Custom felt boxes in collaboration with manufacturer Turf help absorb sound.  Terracotta pots hang playfully from the structure.

A custom powder coated steel tube and bent sheet metal planter adorns a large communal table and provides foliage inside that echoes the surrounding campus.

Custom 2, 4, and 6-person booths anchor some of the spaces and give students a sense of comfort and privacy when they need it.
